The Bloom
The client challenged me to create a low-cost packaging solution for her apple “rose” cake for Mother’s Day, a package that could function both as protection and as a gift. After an extensive sketching process, the concept emerged through research into origami structures. The main challenge was structural: origami roses are not designed to hold weight at their center, especially not a cake. This required multiple iterations and redesigns of the base structure until a stable solution was achieved. The final package is entirely glue-free, self-closing, and made from two single square sheets. When closed, it appears to be a simple gift box. When opened, the structure unfolds and “blooms” into a rose, directly referencing the cake inside. Beyond its conceptual value, the project proved commercially successful: sales tripled, production had to be repeated to meet demand, and the packaging was later reused for other occasions such as Women’s Day.
