The Father
This monument addresses the human cost of the Portuguese Colonial War, paying tribute to the many women who were widowed while their husbands were deployed overseas. Before developing the concept, I conducted research and spoke with former soldiers and their families. One particular story deeply influenced the project: a local woman who was pregnant when her husband left for war and never returned. The monument, built in stone and metal, features an illustration of a soldier and his pregnant wife. The soldier carries the exact firearm model used during that period, reinforcing the historical accuracy and emotional weight of the piece. Located near the place where this story unfolded, the work stands as a physical reminder of personal loss within a broader historical context. The soldier’s daughter attended the inauguration, turning the monument into a living testimony of the war’s lasting impact.
