The celebration

50 Years of April is a commemorative monument designed to mark the 50th anniversary of the April 25th Revolution. I explored materials, symbolism, and spatial context to create a design that would both honor the event and activate the previously neglected park. The core concept emerged around a numerically articulated “50” covered in ceramic tiles, each representing a carnation. Every carnation symbolizes an individual whose actions contributed to the revolution and made these 50 years of democracy possible. Using the traditional corda seca technique, I developed prototypes and tested patterns to ensure the form would be visually coherent at scale while maintaining material authenticity. Parallel to the monument itself, I designed the surrounding environment to support public engagement. Every element, from benches to the small garden. On the reverse side, the monument incorporates a didactic tile mural with illustration and text, providing historical context and fostering educational experiences. The space has since become a place where schools hold picnics and engage students in conversations about the importance of democracy.
